Dan, looks like you’ve had your Canon Powershot S100 about a year now. What are its pros and cons? I’m a serious amateur, and this seems like the near-perfect ‘go anywhere’ camera that, I think, takes high quality photos with enthusiast features such as RAW format, capability of capturing high dynamic range, and decent video, too.

    Your thoughts?
    Thanks.

Well, I’ve now sold it to a friend, but it was a solid camera. I loved the S90 and the S100 is a definite improvement on it, but I can’t say it was a big enough improvement over the S90 (or rather, the S95) to warrant the ticket price. I never got the GPS to work.

Low-noise performance and shutter-lag is what I look for most, in order to justify having a pocket camera different than a good camera phone. The S100 was pretty good in these categories, and the extra range is nice. However, I stopped using it because I bought a Sony NEX-7…which, even with the pancake lens, is definitely not as pocketable as the S100. However, between the NEX-7 and an iPhone 4S, I couldn’t justify carrying around a third camera.

However, back when all I had was the Canon 5D2, I was so satisfied with the S90 and its tradeoffs for its size that I almost stopped carrying around the 5D2 for awhile. So the s-series are definitely solid. It’s up to each person to decide between the S100 and the discounted S95
